Schools participate in environmental waste contest

According to the municipality, the competition formed part of a series of environmental preserving education programmes that the municipality is embarking on.

A school environmental waste education competition was recently held by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality at the Uvongo Town Hall.

According to the municipality, the competition formed part of a series of environmental preservation education programmes that it is embarking on.

It said that out of the 71 participating schools in the waste education programme, at least 39 schools entered the competition.

The municipality added that the competition was judged under the categories of art and culture, poetry, speech, music and drama.

In a statement, the municipality said the recent competition was aimed at sensitising the community on the importance of preserving nature for future generations to come.

It added that the environmental waste education competition was aimed at emphasising the importance of integrated waste management concepts in the broad spectrum of sustainable development.

“To tackle behavioural and psychological aspects of the young minds (learners) at an early stage to enhance good waste management practises as well as to impart and inspire environmental preservation concept to be culminated or translated into various environmental waste activities implemented by schools. Schools showcased their talents by turning waste into new recycled products,” read the statement.
