Poetry competition winners crowned

Jessica Naicker of Ignite Revolution told Fever that the idea of the competition came through counselling, saying that it was a pattern that emerged that the youth feel unheard.

Non-profit Ignite Revolution of Port Shepstone crowned the winners of its poetry competition at St Michaels Sands Hotel recently.

The organisation’s Jessica Naicker told Fever that the idea for the competition came through counselling, saying that a pattern emerged that the youth felt unheard.

She said in observing Women’s Month (August), they decided to dedicate it to young women.
Naicker said the topic was ‘A Girl’s Voice’.

“Many girls who entered wrote about their hurt and painful personal experiences and in some cases the abuse they had suffered. Many of them said it was the first time that they had spoken out and it gave them so much peace, and they felt as if a weight had been lifted off their shoulders,” said Naicker.

Winners of the competition were Danielle Gie, Philasande Mthembu, Siane Moodley and two others who could not attend the prize giving.

Naicker said they achieved more than what they initially hoped for.

She said they aim to engage with the youth on an ongoing basis, providing a platform for them to be heard.

“Thanks to all who participated, your poems were incredible, we are so blessed to be able to share them on our platform and it was a treat to read them. Congratulations to all our worthy winners and a big thanks to the generous sponsors,” said Naicker, adding that they were also blessed to meet the wonderful poets and their families.
