14 steps to keep your children safe

Children should not be left alone at home or elsewhere where they can be susceptible to abuse, alcohol or drugs.

Police have suggested the following tips to keep children safe at all times.

Parents or caretakers of children must:
1. Be responsible for their children and ensure their safety at all times, know where they are going and when they will return.

2. Keep an open line of communication and trust between them, their children and the school and know their children’s friends.

3. Know that there is no waiting period to report a person as missing.

4. Keep a close watch on their children at swimming pools, beaches and shopping centres.

5. Not leave children unattended while playing outside.

6. Not send children to the store alone or to run errands.

7. Children must be picked up promptly by their arranged transport after school.

8. Children must not walk home alone from school, rather walk in large groups. Parents can take turns to walk their children to and from school if necessary.

9. Children should not be left alone at home or elsewhere where they can be susceptible to abuse, alcohol or drugs.

10. Children must be taught to keep the windows and doors locked.

11. Know their parents and police phone numbers.

12. Know that is it okay to say no in uncomfortable situations.

13. Children must not accept sweets, gifts or cash from strangers.

14. Children must not get into a car with someone they do not know and without asking parents’ permission first.
