Diamond Diggers unearth 4×4 golf glory

This was the 23rd occasion the tournament has been played, with a record 34 teams this year.

It was a return to some happy hunting grounds at San Lameer Country Club for the Diamond Diggers last week.
Schalk Oosthuizen, his son Cobus and friends Pieter Helm and Poen Olivier won the hugely popular Men’s 4×4 Golf Challenge at San Lameer CC.

At the end of it all, it came down to the very last putt.
The Diamond Diggers scored 367 points, and so did the Lucky Loeks.

Unfortunately, luck was not on their side in the countout despite some sharp shooting to accumulate such a good total, and they had to settle for second place.

Their team comprised Lukas Potgieter, Henry Human, Paul Pelser and JP Meyer.
Maybe the feeling of missing out wasn’t too bad as they did win it last year. This meant they had the honour of presenting the new winners with the trophy.

For the winners, there aren’t many who know the course as well as Schalk and Cobus.
Schalk is a former San Lameer CC general manager and ‘Cobie’ club champion, who also represented KZN before leaving to learn how to fly aeroplanes.

Third place went to the Hardekole on 361 points, namely Barry van der Vyver Snr, Wimpie le Roux, Willem Tollig and Barry van der Vyver Jnr.

Teams from all over the country battled it out over four rounds, playing alliance, betterball, foursomes and individual. This was the 23rd occasion the tournament has been played, with a record 34 teams this year.
Pierre van Vuuren (San Lameer CC General Manager) thanked all the sponsors for making the week possible, as well as the players. “We are looking forward to having all of the teams back on the South Coast in 2024,” he said.
