BRONWYN TANNER: Tuning In – Joys of living in a small town

Community news and events for Pennington and surrounding areas.

The beginning of June. The sixth month of the year. We will be talking Christmas and New Year in a while!
The joy of living in a small community is that you are not anonymous. The downside of living in a small community is that you are not anonymous! However…when it comes to the rubbish truck, they know me – and hoot and shout and smile. I have been known to load up my black bags in the back of my car and drive around looking for the truck because I missed it. They never fail to give me the most amazing greeting. They are picking up other people’s rubbish, and yet they have smiling, happy faces. Such incredible attitudes. I’m not sure if I would be the same, doing that job.

Every winter, Umdoni Retirement Village has a market. This year it will be held inside the hall on Saturday, June 24. A few tables are still available. If you would like to take one, contact Lesley Perchman on WhatsApp 083 2871296. No general store or imported goods.

I received this important information for beach walkers – if you come across a stranded seal, you can help by knowing what to do and who to call. Do: call the authorities; set up a 5m perimeter to keep onlookers and more importantly dogs away. Gather information. Stay with the seal. Don’t: chase the seal back into the sea; touch, feed or handle the seal in any way. SAAMBR is one of the principal members of the KZN Marine Stranding network. Contact them (24/7) for any and all stranded marine animals on 031 328 8222.
