RNM’s ‘Zero’ Mqadi to take up post of Ugu mayor

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality will now be without a mayor and will have to fill the position, at least before the 2024 elections.

Sikhumbuzo ‘Zero’ Mqadi, currently the mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM), will be the new mayor of Ugu District Municipality, ANC spokesperson Xolani Luthuli has confirmed.

Luthuli said there were three contenders and as the ANC, they decided to appoint Mqadi.

“It is true, we have appointed him and as soon as next week we will make it official.”

Luthuli said they are now waiting for Ugu to check their schedule and an available date for the inauguration.

“We don’t want the inauguration to clash with other meetings.”

It is believed that Ugu is busy with preparations.

Ugu’s spokesperson Mondli Ngcobo said a formal announcement will be made, once all processes to appoint a new mayor have been finalised.

When Luthuli was asked what will happen at RNM with Mqadi’s appointment at Ugu, he said no decision has been made as yet.

“We have not discussed RNM but we will follow the same process as with Ugu and then decide.”
A source said that Zodwa Mzindle who is currently the speaker of RNM might take up the post of mayor.
The Herald was unable to get hold of Mqadi for comment.

RNM spokesperson, Simon April said the office has heard about the possibility of Mqadi resigning, however the Office of the Speaker has not received a resignation letter.
It is believed the post was also offered to Ravi Pillay.
