No water leads to angry N2 protest

The N2 was closed for most of the morning as demonstraters blocked the road.

TYRES were burnt and traffic came to a standstill for hours along the N2 this morning when the community of Murchison protested about the lack of water supply to their area.

The community say they have been living without water for about eight months and are tired of Ugu District Municipality’s empty promises to restore water to the area.

It’s unclear at this stage as why there has been no water and the Herald has requested a press statement from Ugu.

“I haven’t washed my blankets for eight months. How are we expected to survive without water? We need our water back,” said an angry protester.

A large squad of policemen was called in to calm the situation, and the frustrated and vocal crowd was addressed by Ugu officials including Mayor Ntombifikile Gumede.

The road was re-opened to traffic at about 11.30am. For more photos, visit our gallery.
