Remember the song Puppet on a String, sung by the happily barefoot onstage singer, Petula Clark?
Are the lyrics of this melody perhaps a potted pen-picture of the present political position, postured persuasively per politicians, professing people that should receive services but deliver none?
The lyrics relate that ‘maybe one day you’ll say you care. Say that you’ll love me madly and gladly be there. Like a puppet on a string.’
Well, until our politicians can say they care and love us madly, and mean it, nothing will change.
South Africans will vote them back in power following suitable sweet talking and promises – only to find nothing will change.
Apparently, the test of madness is repeating the same exercise over and over, yet expecting a different result.
Nope! Will not happen, so get used to many more years loadshedding and general infrastructure failure – they do not care because ‘I’m alright Jack’ and as long as I am all right, all is right with the world.
