Major road upgrade under way in Umdoni

A number of job opportunities have been created through this project.

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, visited the mid-South Coast last week and attended a contractor hand-over ceremony for the upgrade of Umdoni’s P77 Road at the Phindavele Sports Ground in Ward 3.

Residents of Wards 2 and 3 applauded the upgrade project, a long awaited one as the road runs between both wards.
A 10 kilometre stretch of road will be upgraded aided by a cash injection of R339-million.

The municipality’s mayor, Cllr Sibongile Khathi, welcomed the project which is expected to bring positive change to the affected communities, and she expressed her gratitude for the project which has been a service delivery outcry for some time.

Traditional leadership of the areas also made a special appeal that the community works together with all stakeholders to ensure seamless execution of the project.

This project seems to shed a light on employment as well due to the number of job opportunities created.
MEC Hlomuka announced that R90-million of the project’s budget will benefit the local community in contractual work. This was the highlight of the day for many.

He added that 45 youth with a Grade 12 qualification will be trained during the course of the upgrade project and be certified with an NQF Level 4 qualification.
