BRONWYN TANNER: Tuning in – Community comes together to clean up Salmon Drive

Community news and events for Pennington.

Last week, Marius Klokie and Tracy-Ann Klokie initiated a clean-up in the Salmon Drive area. A few neighbours heeded the call to help and several gardeners got stuck in too.

They cleared the dead trees, scraped the road where the grass had been allowed to grow over the tar, cut the grass, neatened the bushes, and even painted the ugly dustbin.

What was most interesting was the amount of pliers, screwdrivers and even knives found hidden in the bushes. A good reminder to everyone with overgrown verges and vacant properties, to keep them neat and cleared!

Thanks to Marius and Tracy-Ann for embracing the Tidy Towns Pennington concept – what an amazing initiative. Thanks to Nathi and his brother Vincent Myende for their hard work in the unrelenting sun. Thanks to Rycon Construction for taking several loads of branches and cuttings to the dump.

Thanks to Cavell Deal for pitching in and for the snacks; to the members of The Ras household, Angelo and Dalene and others who helped, and someone even planted plants.

This is what community is all about. The difference is startling, and it just goes to show what a good idea, and some willing hands can do to beautify the area where you live!

Tidy Towns Pennington is working to make Pennington a beautiful place.

Thanks to R&M Construction and Plant Hire for collecting the cuttings and carting a full truckload to the dump. Which street is next? Contact Tidy Towns Pennington and they’ll make it official.

Pennington Recreation Club is the owner and custodian of Relton Hall. The club was formed in 1953 after Laurel Pennington donated a piece of land, and a thatched roof clubhouse was built in 1961, which burnt down in 1977. The Pennington community collected funds and built the current hall which was officially opened in June 1980. Relton Hall is available for use by all residents of Pennington. The various activities and functions provided by the club generates the funds for the running and maintenance of the facility.
Residents of Pennington are urged to become members of the club, to preserve it for future generations. Volunteers are invited to arrange fundraising events at the hall, or make donations to contribute to the much-needed roof repair. For membership forms e-mail to reltonhall@yahoo.com and current membership fees are R100 per year.
