Two top-five finishes for Cameron

There'll be more tournaments in Durban and Pietermaritzburg in the new year.

Cameron Olivant (13) of Southbroom Golf Club had a pretty decent showing during the recent series of junior golf tournaments on the South Coast.

He shot 78 in the Hibiscus Classic at Margate Country Club, with an early round double bogey on the 3rd not helping his cause.

Still, the 78 was good enough for tie for third with Philip du Toit (Kokstad), behind winner Cameron Wessels (Ladysmith) who had 76 and runner-up Damien McConnell (Umkomaas) who scored 77.

At the Joe Richardson Trophy at Southbroom Golf Club, juniors were greeted by heavy rain but teed off anyway.

Cameron opened with a superb 37, but spoilt a good round with a triple bogey on the 16th – without losing a ball.

He then compounded his misery by signing for a higher score on a certain hole and instead of 79 ended up with an 80 and in 15th place.

The tournament was won by star player Daniel Bennett (Royal Durban) on 68. Runner-up was Dian Wilmot (Royal Durban) on 70.

The final event was the South Coast Champs at Port Shepstone Country Club.

It was again won by Daniel Bennett, again on 68, with Dian Wilmot runner-up on 72.

Conditions, while soft, damp and drizzly, were a lot better overall.

Cameron, who was level par after 11 holes – having started on the 10th – shot 75 to finish in fifth place.

Fellow junior Nic Crossman (17), also Southbroom GC, missed the first day and then had rounds of 89 and 88.

He’s a much better player than those scores reflect and once he gets used to playing in tournaments, those scores will be in the 70s soon enough.
