New speaker of council for Umzumbe

The election of a new Speaker came after removal of Khanyile following a motion of no confidence which was tabled and duly supported by majority of councillors.

Umzumbe Municipality now has a new Speaker of Council.

Councillor Sbonelo Maphumulo of the African National Congress was sworn in as the new Speaker last week.

Maphumulo replaced the Inkatha Freedom Party’s Sboniso Khanyile.

He was sworn in during a recent special council meeting convened by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

According to Umzumbe municipal spokesperson, Sabelo Ncwane, the election of a new Speaker came after the removal of Khanyile following a motion of no confidence which was tabled and duly supported by majority of councillors.

Speaking after his inauguration, Maphumulo said he is committed to creating a united council and working effortlessly in advancing a better community for the people of Umzumbe.
