Deteriorating road upsets Gamalakhe residents

Ward councillor Phumlani Gumbi said the he has been in contact with Ugu District Municipality regarding the problem.

Residents of Mamkobosi Road in Gamalakhe Ward 5 are concerned about the poor condition of the road, and the slow response from the municipality to repair it.

The road is full of cracks, water seeps from below the surface and it’s starting to collapse on one end. It gets worse during heavy rains.
Over the past three years, motorists have resorted to taking alternate routes as they fear that their vehicles will be damaged by the loose gravel and potholes which have formed a sinkhole.

Water seeping out from beneath the road surface.

One resident said she has a school transport business and has to use the road daily. When she drives out of her yard, she has to avoid two potholes and a trench in front of her driveway.

Also, according to residents the road is always wet. After days of rain it becomes slippery and slimy because water seeps out from below the surface.

Ward councillor Phumlani Gumbi agreed that the state of the road is terrible. He commend residents for the disciplined manner in which they have addressed the matter, as he has met with a few of them to discuss it.

“It’s Ugu’s water that is destroying our road. A team came out and to my surprise they took months to fix the problem which had also affected a resident’s yard, “said Gumbi.
He said Ugu is aware of the ongoing problem.

“Ugu needs to fix the water problem before the road surface as it would be a fruitless expenditure if the surface is fixed while the water is still seeping from underneath,” added Gumbi.

The road has cracked and formed trenches.

He thanked the residents for their resilience and raising their concerns rather than fighting. “As much as I will still call meetings to address community issues, I do invite the residents to contact me whenever they have matters they wish to discuss.” Gumbi concluded.
