Cataract campaign restores eyesight of 27 patients

Sheppy hospital restores the eyesight of 27 patients as part of their cataract campaign

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital‘s Eye Clinic led by operational manager, Nandashnee Ramdutt and professional nurse, Nokuzola Jenkins successfully organised a cataract campaign which made a huge difference in restoring the eyesight of 27 patients who underwent surgery on November 13 and 14.

Four campaigns have been held since October 2021 and 128 patients have been operated on during these campaigns.
Although Port Shepstone Hospital is the only healthcare facility in the Ugu district that has an ophthalmologist and ophthalmic medical officers, it encourages patients with eye issues to be seen at their local hospitals and community health centres which can then refer them if their condition is serious.

The hospital’s PRO, Phumza Morai said the management extends its gratitude to Dr Frik de Jager, a private specialist ophthalmologist who offered his time and operated on patients at no cost during the campaign.

“We also thank the Eye Clinic specialist ophthalmologist Dr Stephen Manyeruke and Dr Nashin Salagooa who also participated in the campaign.”
