Umdoni condemns statements on challenges of PPE provision on social media

The municipal manager has addressed the matter as well.

Umdoni Municipality has taken note of unauthorised statements released on social media by some honourable members of council which are believed to contain inaccuracies.

“The municipality categorically disputes these unfounded statements that lack fact, accuracy and objectiveness and this is seen as cheap political tactics by people who should instead lead by example and bring unity to the Umdoni community,” said Sphelele Cele, Umdoni communications manager.

“The municipality acknowledges that it is currently experiencing challenges surrounding the issue of the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to workers which has caused disruption of services.”

“It must however be understood by all concerned that processes for the finalisation of this matter are underway.”

According to the municipal manager, Thabisile Ndlela, the provision of PPE is done in yearly intervals and staff members were provided with PPE in November last year.

“The municipality is still within the time frames of issue,” said Ndlela.

“Both the political leadership and senior management have on a number of occasions interacted with staff members and union representatives on this matter and are aware that the municipality has sought the intervention of the Treasury Department for emergency procurement of PPEs.”

“The Supply Chain Management processes that were followed proved unfavourable hence the request for intervention to the Treasury Department. The inaccurate information being disseminated on social media platforms regarding unavailability of PPE funds and the sourcing of private services is a misrepresentation of the truth and this will not be taken lightly. Funds are available and will be utilised for the intended purpose.”

The municipality assures the community that it is treating this matter with the highest priority and will ensure that services are reinstated as soon as possible.

“We request the community’s understanding and cooperation while we ensure swift resumption of services.”
