Relief for Mthwalume businesses after unrest

28 containers were donated to businesses in the Thulini Centre in Mthwalume.

Following the devastating impact left by the July 2021 unrest at the Thulini Centre in Mthwalume, a good Samaritan, Afrika Tikkun donated containers to businesses that were affected by the looting.

Afrika Tikkun’s marketing executive, Precious Nala said they donated 28 containers to businesses in the Thulini Centre in Mthwalume.
Nala said not all 28 containers could fit in the centre, adding that they are hoping that the Mathulini Traditional Council and community members would provide them with space to put the 18 containers that could not fit in the centre.

“A number of businesses lost a lot during the July 2021 unrest so as the organisation, we saw an opportunity to help businesses that were affected by the looting.

We decided to assist them with infrastructure, food and more. Businesses applied for grant funding to either build infrastructure or get cash to buy stock, pay for employees and take care of their families. We are here in Mthwalume to hand over containers and these are fire resistant, they last longer and are not easy to damage. So these businesses will be safe should there be another uproar,” said Nala.

One of the beneficiaries, Bukhosibakhe Chiliza said the July unrest really had a negative impact on his business.
Chiliza who sells sweets and cooldrinks said he had lost everything in the looting.

“Life has been hard since the unrest but now that the centre has been rebuilt, we are very happy. We are grateful for donations,” said Chiliza.
Another beneficiary, Nomusa Ndlovu who sells fruits and vegetables said she was very emotional as things at home were starting to look bad after the looting.
