Three other patients, were found to have sustained serious injuries and required advanced life support intervention to stabilise them. They were transported to a local hospital, said Herbst.

Among them was a man, who had been freed from the wreckage using hydraulic tools. He had sustained critical injuries, was treated on scene and once stabilised was airlifted by Netcare 911 helicopter to hospital.

Paramedics met the Netcare 911 helicopter at Mtwalume beach parking area as the weather was too poor for the chopper to land closer to the accident scene. The man died a few hours later in hospital. Circumstances leading up to the incident will be investigated by the relevant authorities.
