OPINION: Plans for small craft harbour should be shelved
The municipalities should not spend any more money than that which has already been wasted.

Dear Editor:
So the small craft harbour is again on the cards? That’s where the plans should remain. Is it a rehash of previous plans?
The matter was previously investigated and shelved, for good reasons, among these being costs of construction/upkeep and, at one stage, constructing a drawbridge on the existing bridge to allow yachts to gain entry – but there was talk of tolling motorists for its use and upkeep.
I append photos of the Mzimkhulu river in spate during the 1959 floods where the road/rail bridge was washed away, the standby power station (Spillers wharf) was permanently decommissioned due to damage.

Where would the harbour be after such a flood?
The municipalities should not spend any more money than that which has already been wasted.
Finally, I enclose a few photos of the Port Shepstone Country Club and the aftermath of the 1959 floods.
I doubt that any insurer who knows the history would underwrite any policies for such a project.
If this doesn’t convince the powers that be then nothing will.
