Teen drowns at Mzamba beach

A group of seven people from Harding were swimming when two boys got into difficulties.

A 14-year-old boy drowned and a 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital in a serious condition after an incident at Mzamba beach last Sunday.

Gert du Plessis, NSRI Port Edward station commander said the duty crew were called to the scene.

NSRI rescue swimmers, Police Search and Rescue, Mthonjaneni Lifesaving lifeguards, Netcare 911 ambulance services and KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services responded.

“It appears that a group of seven people from Harding were swimming when two boys in the group, a 12-year-old and 14-year-old, reportedly got into difficulties in the water and we believe that they were caught in rip currents. On NSRI arriving on the scene the boy (12) was found on the beach. He was in a critical condition suffering non-fatal drowning symptoms, while the 14-year-old was reported to be missing in the water. NSRI medics rendered medical treatment to the 12-year-old while a search commenced for the missing teenager, “added Du Plessis.

The 12-year-old was stabilised on the beach and transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The missing teenager was located about 250m north of where they had been swimming. “NSRI and Police Search and Rescue recovered the body from the rocks.

Police have opened an inquest docket.

In another incident Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a drowning at the pool of a seaside hotel on Margate Beach last Saturday. Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst said two women sank to the bottom of the pool, shortly after jumping in.

“Both women were pulled out of the water by hotel patrons who witnessed the incident. Medics assessed both patients who had ingested pool water but were in a stable condition. Once treated, the patients were transported to hospital by EMS paramedics.”
