Southbroom wins McKenzie Cup at Margate

There has been quite a bit on the go at the club of late.

Margate Country Club hosted the prestigious McKenzie Cup recently.

It turned out to be an ‘amazing tournament’, enjoyed by all.

Andrew Curlewis presented the players with an unbelievable course, especially the greens.

“I can’t emphasise enough how good they were,” said club captain Carlos Pereira.

“Andrew also kept us all well fed and hydrated over the weekend.”

There were 96 players overall, in teams of four, split into pairs, playing betterball Stableford – from 10 different clubs.

These comprised hosts Margate CC, Southbroom, Port Shepstone, Swartberg, Kokstad, Harding, Matatiele, Richmond, Port Edward and Underberg.

Winners of the Izotsha Farmers’ Association Conservancy Day were (from left) Lance Papenfus, John Evans, Marius Stewart and Mitchell Blewitt.

The winning team on 165 points was Southbroom B, namely Anton Kohrmann, Gary Purtell, Brian Jolliffe and Johan Wentzel.

Runners-up on 164 was Margate B comprising Joe Espach, Johan Erasmus, Poen Olivier and Harold Olkers.

Third on 162 was Kokstad C in Burt Terblanche, Willem Erselman, Leon Swart and Deon Meyer.

There was a bottle of wine for the nearest to the pins on all the par threes for Saturday and Sunday, donated by the Margate pro shop.

Saturday – Graeme Massam (2nd), Sean van Eeden (4th), Doc Ralph Calder (8th), Grant Langley (11th) and Sean Baker (16th).

Sunday – Craig Rademan (2nd), Johan Erasmus (4th), Deon Meyer (8th), Don Osbourn (11th) and Doc Ralph Calder (16th).

Players are already looking forward to next year’s tournament, which will be held at Richmond.
