Two sentenced for tavern shootings

Meanwhile, Margate Station Commander, Brigadier William Slabbert commended the entire team of detectives involved in achieving the conviction and sentencing.

The two men who killed five men at two taverns in Mankuntshane and Lamont areas near Margate in 2018 were sentenced in the Scottburgh High Court on Thursday last week.

According to Margate police spokesperson, Sergeant Sibu Ncane, on April 1, 2018 one victim was shot dead and two other men sustained gunshot wounds when two unknown men entered a tavern and began shooting.

“The gunmen then fled. On April 16, 2018 two men entered the second tavern and shot four people after forcing them to lie on the floor whereafter they robbed the tavern and fled.

After they were arrested, the first accused Sanele Nhlumayo (20) pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced in 2019 in Pietermaritzburg to 12 years imprisonment,” said Ncane.

He added that the second accused, Thulani ‘Ndende’ Nhlumayo was found guilty and sentenced on September 8 to five life sentences, 15 years imprisonment for robbery, 12 years for possession of an unlicensed firearm, 10 years imprisonment for two counts of attempted murder and three years imprisonment for unlicensed ammunition.

Ncane said the detectives investigating the cases were Detective Sergeant Michelle van Niekerk and Detective Sergeant Siphiwosenkosi Hlongwane of Margate Detective Service.
