Giving the gift of water

One resident's selfless act has made a difference in the lives of many.

Port Edward resident Gerhard Wessels’s recent selfless act has made a big difference in the community.

Wessels noticed that people were suffering as a result of the ongoing water crisis and asked for help from the Gift of the Givers Foundation.

The foundation is the largest non-government disaster response organisation of African origin on the African continent.

Wessel said 3000 5-l bottles of drinking water were received for distribution to those in need.

“Water was given to residents in the rural areas last week. This week water will be handed out to old ages homes in Port Edward, Leisure Bay and Palm Beach,” he explained.

Vanessa Murray of Looking After Leisure Bay has been assisting Gerhard with the distribution of water in certain areas.

She thanked the organisation for its generous donation and explained that water tanks are being erected in key areas.

“What Gerhard has done is amazing and it has inspired me. It’s impossible for one to not see how one man, who cared enough for the entire community, has made a difference, without fanfare, pats on the back, or high fives,” she said.

Ibrahim Shaik, President of the Hibberdene Lions Club, recently met with Gerhard to discuss the water problems in that region.

“Relief for the people must come from the people. We support the real heroes like Gerhard and Vanessa who do this work selflessly and without any hidden agendas,” he said.

The three are now in discussions about short, medium and long term water solutions for the Umtamvuna region
