Southbroom, Selborne set for handicap league showdown

Matches have been highly competitive this season.

Selborne Park kept their unbeaten run in the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Handicap Golf League intact, but only just.

They beat defending champions Port Shepstone 6,5-5,5 at windswept Margate CC, seeing off a mighty fight-back from Port Shepstone in the afternoon.

Selborne had won the betterball 3,5-0,5 but Sheppie won the next five singles games to create some major excitement.

However, their top three of Adrian van Vuuren, Darryl Herman and Jacques Kruger saw them through.

It was agonising for Sheppie as a win would have kept them in contention for the title. But that’s gone now.

In the other two games, Southbroom A beat Margate 8,5-3,5 and Southbroom B beat Umdoni Park by the same margin.

This was a crucial win for the B side, led by Gavin Sole, as it means that they can still win the league and the R5000 prize which will go to the winning club.

The final fixture takes place at Port Shepstone on September 4. Southbroom B will play Selborne Park in what amounts to a sprint for the finish line.

However, Selborne Park can secure the trophy if the match is halved 6-6.

On the other hand, Southbroom B, despite losing to Port Shepstone in the opener, will win the league if they beat Selborne Park as their match points are much higher.

In the other two games, Port Shepstone play Southbroom A, the winner taking third place.

Margate will play Umdoni and while they won’t be able to avoid the wooden spoon, they may at least be able to secure a consolation win.

It’s all set for a thrilling finish.
