Hibberdene murder suspect nabbed in Gamalakhe

Police managed to catch one suspect who was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as 13 capsules of heroine.

Residents in Bambayi under Ward 27 in Gamalakhe said they are relieved that police managed to arrest a man who was starting to make the area feel unsafe.

On Saturday, August 13 off-duty police officers arrested a man in Gamalakhe, a wanted murder suspect linked to an incident that occurred in Hibberdene in May.

A resident in Bambayi who did not want to be named said it was scary living near the house where the murder suspect was arrested. She said crime in the area started increasing in June.

“The number of people who were getting mugged at gun and knifepoint had increased. The Dutch bus stop going past the Bambayi sports field was no longer safe in the late hours of the day. Young people who went to that house to play cards/gamble said where they were gambling, there was a full display of firearms,” alleged the resident.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said an off-duty officer received information regarding a wanted murder suspect linked to an incident that occurred in Hibberdene in May.

Ngcobo said the officer was with two other off-duty officers and he immediately followed-up on the information, adding that the wanted suspect was traced to Gamalakhe Township.

She added that the suspect was with two other men, saying that they were armed.

“The police officers requested backup from Gamalakhe SAPS and the Port Shepstone K9 Unit. When the three men spotted the police officers, they fled in different directions. Police managed to catch one suspect who was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as 13 capsules of heroin. The police officers continued to search for the other suspects and the one that was wanted for murder was traced to a house in Gamalakhe where he was hiding,” said Ngcobo.

She added that the suspect was found in possession of a firearm, ammunition and 11 bags of crystal meth.

“Both suspects aged between 31 and 41 were detained at Gamalakhe SAPS and charged for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of drugs. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon,” said Ngcobo.
