Hospital staff celebrate Mandela Day at children’s home

The smiles on the faces of the children were evidence of their joy for everything that had taken place at their home on Mandela Day.

Port Shepstone Hospital Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC), under the slogan ‘Do what you can, with what you have, where you are’ collaborated with different stakeholders and visited Sacred Heart Children’s Home in Umthwalume on Mandela Day.

They used their strengths, resources and skills to equip young children with necessary information and resources to deal with the different challenges they face in their lives.

During the educational session, Professional Nurse Thobeka Hlophe raised awareness about TCC as a place, which is in service of society.

She elaborated on how to look for signs and symptoms of sexual assault, as well as when and how to report crimes of sexual assault and abuse.

“It is better to report crimes of sexual assault to TCC, as it is a one-stop shop for everything the person needs, such as post exposure prophylaxis treatment (which must be given within 72 hours), opening of a case, collection of evidence, therapy and ongoing counseling, said Sister Hlophe.

Emergency numbers for the police – 10111, Emergencies – 112 and Childline -166 were shared with the staff of the home.

TCC staff donated clothes, stationery and cosmetics.

After the information session, questions followed to see if the children understood. Those who gave reasonable answers were given goodie bags.

Sister Duduzile Ndlovu, TCC operational manager, quoting from her personal life, motivated the children to never give up in life, as there are many possibilities.

She’s the author of a book entitled ‘Why Hope Matters’ and donated a copy to the staff at the centre.

Various participants presented motivation for positive change, raising awareness and expanding the reach of Nelson Mandela’s values – helping people in need and having hope that things will change for the better.

The smiles on the faces of the children were evidence of their joy for everything that had taken place at their home on Mandela Day.
