Suspected copper cable thief shot dead

An inquest docket was opened at Amanzimtoti police station for investigation.

While conducting patrol duties on the R102 near Clansthal last Friday at 00:30, security guards noticed a grey vehicle with three men loading overhead copper cables.

When the suspects spotted the guards, they dropped the cables and opened fire while fleeing the scene.

“The security guards retaliated while chasing the suspects who drove away in an unknown direction,” said Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo of the KZN Saps Media Centre.

“Charges of attempted murder, tampering with essential infrastructure and theft were opened at Umkomaas police station for investigation.”

A few hours later, the same vehicle was found abandoned on Tacoma Road in Amanzimtoti at 07:00.

Police discovered the body of a man (25) seated in the passenger seat with a gunshot wound to the back.

The vehicle was searched and the overhead copper cables were recovered.

“It is alleged that the vehicle was dumped by the suspects who fled the scene on foot when they noticed that their friend has succumbed to his injuries,” added Cst. Ngcobo.
