Southern KZN golfers top pool but Premier League now cancelled

The foursomes were a bit of a shock, with the hosts going down 3-1.

On a breezy, slightly chilly (at times) day on June 5, the Southern KwaZulu-Natal premier league golf defeated Mount Edgecombe CC 8,5-3,5 at Selborne Park to top the log in their pool.

A home semi-final at Port Shepstone should have awaited against the team finishing second in the other pool.

The KZN Golf Union has since announced that the Premier and Central Leagues have been cancelled for the year.

This is due to the unavailability of courses in the Durban area after the devastation wreaked during the April floods.

At Selborne – for the record – the foursomes were a bit of a shock, with the hosts going down 3-1. It’s possible that Mount Edgecombe were even more shocked, as they have not had a great season and were missing a few top players.

However, Southern KZN turned it on in the afternoon singles, winning seven and halving one.

In the foursomes, Gary Purtell and Graham Fabricius lost 3/2 to Warren Viljoen and Josh Collin.

David Rush and Jean-Marc Bouic lost 3/2 to Rishaad Bismilla and Kairav Maduray.

Jan McDermott and Jack Cubitt made seven birdies en route to beating John Barnes and Curwin Bosch 7/6.

Gavin Sole and Matt Sutherland suffered a rare defeat, losing 4/2 to Akhil Maduray and Dian Wilmot.

In the singles, Purtell – roped in at the last minute to replace a sick Graham Sole – got things going in the right direction, beating Viljoen 6/5.

Fabricius beat Collin 7/5, Rush halved with Bismilla, Bouic beat Bosch 3/2, McDermott beat Barnes 5/4, Cubitt beat Wilmot 4/3, Sutherland beat Akhil Maduray 1-up and Sole beat Kairav Maduray 3/2.
