Rapist sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment

He took the child into a forest when looking for firewood and raped him.

The Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court recently sentenced Mlungisi Gift Ngubo to 20 years’ imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old boy.

Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, said Ngubo, who was training as a traditional healer at the time repeatedly raped the teenager in August 2019.

Mpinge said the 41-year-old is from the Nomakhanzana area in Hibberdene, adding that he took the child into a forest when looking for firewood and raped him.

“The young boy reported the rape to a school teacher who did not hesitate to contact the police. The suspect was promptly arrested and detained. He was denied bail and remained in police custody throughout his trial. He was sentenced on May 25 in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court and also declared unfit to possess a firearm. His name will be included in the National Register for Sex Offenders,” said Mpinge, adding that the investigating officer in the case was Detective Sergeant Siboniso Gcaba of the Port Shepstone (FCS) Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

He added that Ugu District Commissioner, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele was pleased with the sentence and stressed the importance of listening to children, especially when they report incidents of abuse or sexual assault, and to proactively act on that information.

“As adults, we are entrusted with the care of all children, let us do all we can now during Children Protection Week and always,” said Mpinge.
