Covid-19 and floods leave people hungry

Rajen Mahabeer from Hibiscus Food For Life said the huge demand for food pressurizes them to find more resources.

The Covid-19 pandemic has devastated the lives of citizens on the South Coast.

Rajen Mahabeer from Hibiscus Food For Life said many people are unemployed and now live in shelters.

“Some of them cannot feed their families. Many of them say there are no jobs and they have no income. They ask how will they feed their families. To aggravate matters, the recent floods have damaged many homes,” he said.

“The struggling economy is not easing the situation. Large numbers of people are struggling every day.”

Mahabeer said the huge demand for food pressurizes them to find more resources.

The non-profit organisation provides 5 000 meals per month and food hampers when it can.

They appeal for cash donations or donations of vegetables, rice, beans, oil and spice.
