Village Eagles thanks golf clubs for kindness shown

"Through this column we would also like to make special mention of the kindness shown by the management of Umdoni for allowing the Pennington community to use the changeroom facilities to shower, and to collect water for their usage."

What a month it has been – people have lost their lives, their homes, roads have been damaged and infrastructure has been wrecked.

The rains that fell in the early morning hours of April 12 showed just how angry Mother Nature can be.

The fact that the Village Eagles had to make urgent arrangements to change the venue of its monthly game, pales into insignificance. With half of the Umkomaas golf course closed as a result of the damage done by aforementioned Mother Nature, it was decided to change the game to a less affected Umdoni golf course.

We thank the management of both courses for their understanding and agreement to accommodate us. Through this column we would also like to make special mention of the kindness shown by the management of Umdoni for allowing the Pennington community to use the changeroom facilities to shower, and to collect water for their usage.

What a difference that gesture made to the lives of people living in Pennington. Thank you Umdoni.

Seeing as this is a golf report, we as enthusiastic golfers thank and offer our support to the greenkeeping staff of the affected golf courses. They face an enormous challenge in getting them back into playing condition, and from what we can see are meeting that challenge gallantly.

With all of the changes that had to be made it was good to host 48 golfers for the monthly game. Although the playing conditions were not ideal, fun was had by everyone and are grateful that we could play at all.

The winners on a well played 97 points were Athol Lawrence, Kas van der Merwe, Stan Sim and Dave Jack way ahead of the second placed Paul Thomas, Bill Oliver, Norman Hall and Sarie Hall on a more respectable 91 points.

Best lady golfer was Sarie Hall with 42 individual points and the best male player was Noel Jessop who scored 43 points. The Bald Eagle takes his life in his hands when quietly mentioning that Mike Madsen, Billy Smith, Ivan Malan and Roy Brown took home the Stone Last Trophy.

We look forward to visiting Scottburgh next month.
