Women hitchhikers raped and robbed

Three women were taken to the sugarcane fields and then raped.

Three women who were offered a lift to their home in Umtwalume after work by two strangers were taken to a sugarcane field, where they were raped and robbed.

The women were offered a lift while hitchhiking from the Oribi Plaza traffic lights (R102) in Port Shepstone.

Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge confirmed the incident which occurred on April 25.

“We can confirm that at least three cases of armed robbery and rape have been opened for investigation at Southport Saps. It is alleged that the women were hitchhiking in the evening when they accepted a lift from two unknown men in a VW Polo. The men stopped at a sugarcane field in Umzumbe where the women were robbed of cash and cellphones and then raped,” said Capt Mpinge.

Police are investigating the cases and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with any information that could assist with the investigation is urged to contact the police on Crime Stop 08600 10111.

It is believed that the women were taken in a grey VW Polo with GP a registration.

Police also warns the pubic on their safety when travelling, especially commuting to and from work.

Capt Mpinge issued the following safety tips:

*Be careful when traveling after dark.*Always try to travel with someone you know and travel in a large group.*It is advisable that hitchhikers and specifically women who may work extended hours arrange for a reliable lift club.*When travelling from deserted stations or taxi ranks, especially after rush hour, be aware of criminals. Do not openly display cash or cellphones on public transport. Arrange for a male family member to accompany you home from the bus/taxi stop.*Do not accept lifts from strangers.*Never ever pick up hitchhikers.
