Abrie Spies 95 and still going strong

The popular couple share a long history in the region, especially in real estate, holiday letting and property development.

Abrie Spies is a name that has become synonymous with the South Coast as he’s someone who, over the years, involved himself in various facets of life in the area.

He turned 95 years old on April 13, celebrating another age milestone with family and friends in a small gathering.

The couple have been ‘retired’ now for five years or so, and say living in an old age home is not an option for them.

They are still up and about and enjoying life and have been married for nearly 70 years.

The popular couple share a long history in the region, especially in real estate, holiday letting and property development.

Originally from Vryheid in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, where they farmed, they yearned to be closer to the ocean and made the move in the early ’60s.

Over the years, Abrie was involved in various positions at the school, church, local politics, education, tourism, real estate, and more.

He played a major role is the decision making that led to Suid-Natal Hoerskool becoming a bilingual institution (English and Afrikaans).

“Abrie has always been one to fight for a worthy cause,” said Sarah.

When not working or attending meetings, he enjoyed golf and playing music, featuring in a band at one stage.

They have loved living on the South Coast and have been proud to call it home for the past 40 years or so, despite its problems with water and the condition of the roads.

Sarah (88) said the secret to their longevity was keeping their minds busy and remaining active.
