Southern KZN U20s look to bounce back

Against a quality team like Varsity College it was something they could ill afford, and they struggled from then on.

The Southern KwaZulu-Natal U20 rugby team played against Varsity College at their home grounds in the opening match of the Frank Norris U20 league last Saturday, with the match postponed from the night before.

The team went down 50-6, after trailing 12-6 at half time.

“The course of the match changed just after the start of the second half when the referee red-carded our prop for supposedly an elbow to the head, which no one saw, including the ref, but went on what the AR (assistant ref) told him. That’s the linesman,” said Dougie Haralambous, president of SKZN Rugby.

“We felt it was a really bad decision and ruined what was a good game up until that moment. We then had a further two yellow cards to add to the red, which meant we had only 13 players on the field for most on the second half.”

Against a quality team like Varsity College it was something they could ill afford, and they struggled from then on.

To add to their woes, they lost their scrumhalf to injury about five minutes after the start of the game.

It was a day where everything went wrong and the players know that they are much better than the result shows.

“It’s part of the learning curve when you are playing Premier U20 club rugby. I have no doubt our boys will bounce back next week against Durban Crusaders in Durban this Friday (29th),” said Dougie.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom though as they had the chance of watching the Sharks defeat URC log leaders Leinster in a thrilling game later that evening.
