Wind challenges Umkomaas teams at South Coast Region meet

The ladies were frustrated by their poor 18th hole which saw them manage to add just a single point to an otherwise good alliance score.

Umkomaas entered two teams into this year’s South Coast Region (SCR) meet held at Margate Country Club.

The fourball alliance format proved rather challenging given the very windy conditions, and scores were low overall with 81 proving good enough to take top spot.

The Umkomaas ‘A’ side made up of Sabiha Hulley, Evija McKelvey, Sue Boucher and Lesa Vergottini came in shy by just one point. The ladies were frustrated by their poor 18th hole which saw them manage to add just a single point to an otherwise good alliance score.

The Umkomaas ‘B’ side made up of Natalie Singer, Heather Parsonage, Denise Nell and Max van der Heever struggled, failing to dovetail throughout the round. Their scorecard makes for interesting reading sporting alternating 6 points and 2 points.

At the AGM held later that afternoon Natalie Singer (Silver) and Sue Boucher (Bronze) received their WGSA pins for overall best medal nett scores in 2021. Congrats ladies.

Saturday’s competition was a combined Betterball with 43 players in the field.

Coming out on top were Tallies Taljaard and Lucas De Bruyn with 64 points between them. Second (Graham and Chris Coxell), third (Peter Toward and Alan Eriksen), and fourth (Brian Stephen and Reg Parsons) places were awarded by count-out on 61 points. Two other teams scored 61 but were unable to squeeze into the prizes.

Mike Dennison played the four jackpot holes well to score 11 points and take the money. Two clubs were awarded to Alwyn Stander, Russel McKelvey and Darryl Munn. Well done gents.

Christo van der Heever’s better than handicap 39 points assured him of top honours in last week’s IPS competition. Russell Cumming edged out Barrie Taylor via count out for second spot on 36 points, and Sue Boucher took fourth spot on 35 points after counting-out Alan Eriksen.

The 2022 Fourball Alliance League kicks off this Saturday (26th) with teams vying for a good start to the 10-month long tournament.

Played once per month, the competition provides opportunities to win prizes in each monthly event as well as to accumulate points for the log table. The ultimate winners are awarded at the end of the year based on the highest scores calculated on best 8 out of 10 rounds. Visitors are welcome. Contact the Pro Shop on 039 9731042.
