Not long into their search, Ferie found the remains near the bank of the river.
A fisherman made a gruesome discovery of a body part in the Umtentweni River on Tuesday this week.
Members from the Port Shepstone K9 Search and Rescue Unit together with Rudi Prinsloo from Medevac Ambulance Service went to search for the human remains later that same afternoon.
Sergeant Mark Banjo and his dog, Ferie led the search along the banks of the river.
Not long into their search, Ferie found the remains near the bank of the river.
A lifesaver from Umtentweni beach assisted in getting the remains safely to shore.
Search dogs are trained to find missing people by various means such as air scenting, trailing and tracking.
Interestingly, Ferie, who is now four-years-old is trained among other capabilities, to detect human scent, whether dead or alive.
Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said an inquest docket has been opened by Port Shepstone Saps.
He confirmed the remains were taken to a government mortuary for DNA analysis.
The search for the rest of the remains is ongoing by the search and rescue unit.
