Zero tolerance this season, says Tweni CPF

The Community Policing Forum unveiled its plan to help keep Umtentweni clean, safe and secure over the festive season.

As the South Coast welcomes in the festive season, zero tolerance rules have been put in place to ensure the coast is safe and secure for everyone to enjoy in a peaceful manner.

Umtentweni Community Police Forum (CPF) at a recent stakeholder meeting unveiled its plan to help keep Umtentweni clean, safe and secure over the holiday season.

Working with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality as well as Saps and private security companies, the Umtentweni CPF will coordinate a plan to ensure safety and security at the popular Umtentweni beach.

Selvan Chetty, chairman of the CPF, said recent complaints from residents and ratepayers of rowdy parties, loud music and excessive litter and damage to municipal infrastructure at the beach parking has prompted the CPF to take steps to avoid a recurrence and create a safe zone for residents and tourist families alike.

The following key measures will be put in place and enforced by the Tweni CPF from December 15 until January 12, 2022.

1. Controlled access to Tweni beach to prevent overcrowding and congestion in the parking area.

2. No alcohol will be allowed on the beach or in the restricted zone. Drinking of alcohol in public is not allowed. Random alcohol breathalyser tests will be done and those found over the legal limit will be charged.

3. Any weapon or firearm will not be allowed in the restricted zone. Only Saps, law enforcement officials and security companies on duty will be allowed to be armed.

4. Braais or fires will be restricted to the designated area, and all other braai fires will need to comply with fire/safety standards.

5. The Tweni CPF has a 24-hour patrol and monitoring system with 40 volunteers who will help keep the area safe.

6. Visitors and residents are asked to cooperate with CPF and law enforcement members during this time. All beach parking areas and business centres, as well as strategic roads, will be covered by 24-hour camera surveillance.

7. Stern warnings will be issued to those who drink and drive, those who are rowdy, noisy and disrespectful of permanent residents’ rights and those who litter and disregard local bylaws.

8. No dogs will be allowed on the main beach during this period.

9. Criminals are warned not to try any Christmas shopping this year.

Chetty said they have taken a zero tolerance approach this season and that they will enforce the law.

“We want everyone to feel welcome and safe in an environment that is warm and welcoming for families to enjoy,” he said.
