WATCH: Opposition parties walk out of RNM council meeting

It hasn't been a smooth start at all in terms of who will fill the positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Opposition parties, the IFP, EFF, DA and VF plus have walked out from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s inaugural council meeting which is currently underway at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre.

This occurred after a long debate about electing and proposing the positions for Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

The ANC requested these items be removed from today’s agenda and be discussed at the next council meeting.

Opposition parties then decided to leave after the newly elected Speaker Precious Mzindle ruled on a vote.

A few minutes later the EFF and DA came back in to join the meeting.

Then the EFF left the meeting again.

Today’s council meeting will see councillors being officially sworn in and the Speaker, Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Chief Whip being elected.
