OPINION: ‘Cleaning up not unnoticed’

The area had started to resemble a shack dwelling or sorts, with cardboard laid out, clothes about and basically looking messy and unsightly.

DEAR Editor;

Thank you to whoever from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality initiated the clean-up on the ocean-facing bank as one drives into Port Shepstone from Umtentweni, crossing the Mzimkhulu river bridge.

For a while now I have noticed with some concern the number of vagrants finding shelter under the trees in front of the tyres company premises.

The area had started to resemble a shack dwelling or sorts, with cardboard laid out, clothes about and basically looking messy and unsightly.

Admittedly, it was small and hardly the start of an informal settlement but the thought crossed my mind.

I had in mind the write to the municipality, but to my pleasant surprise noticed a cleaner picking up the litter and whatnot this week.

For now, the area under the trees remains clear and free of litter and hopefully it will stay that way.

While the plight of the homeless is obviously sad and concerning, there must surely be more suitable spots for them to find a haven than the entrance to our town.

GRATEFUL
