UPDATE: Roads reopened to traffic at Hibberdene after protests

Motorists are warned to be careful of debris on the road.

According to reports, the N2 and R102 at Hibberdene have been reopened to traffic.

Both the north and southbound lanes of the N2 are also open.

Motorists are warned to be cautious because of debris on the road – rocks and pieces of broken glass.

Official confirmation whether the roads are open, is being awaited.

The protest action which has blocked off the N2 and R102 at Hibberdene is currently being monitored by police.

“We can confirm that this morning at 06:00 a group of people blockaded the N2 and R102 using burning tyres and stones complaining about the shortage of water supply in the Umzumbe area,” said provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

The situation is being monitored. “No damages or injuries have been reported so far,” she added.

A protest march is taking place at Hibberdene and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

Both the N2 and R102 are closed, preventing motorists from travelling to either Port Shepstone or Durban,

Protestors have placed burning tyres on the roads.
