WATCH: Protests over roads continue

Motorists have been advised to avoid using the road as a precaution.

Sections of the R61/N2 near Port Edward have been blocked as protest action is taking place in the area.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge confirmed that all entrances to the N2 from the rural area are blocked, resulting in the N2 between Munster and Port Edward not being accessible to traffic. Motorists have been advised to avoid using the road as a precaution.

The protest area is believed to be just past the Caltex garage with the outer route via Port Edward believed be blocked too, as well as the R61 at Ithongazi turnoff, Mpenjathi Bridge, and Bambula inland.

“The public is advised to use alternate routes. The community is complaining about the badly damaged rural roads that are not receiving attention,” said Mpinge. At this stage it is not known when it will re-open.

Some reports have suggested it will be later this afternoon, at around 4pm, but nothing could be confirmed.
