TWO people facing animal cruelty charges appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week.

About two weeks ago, a whippet from Gamalahke was brought to the SPCA with burn injuries to its face and body. It’s believed someone had thrown boiling water at the animal.

In a separate case, a dog was bought to the SPCA after it was allegedly hacked with a panga in Gclima location. Officers from the Margate SAPS contacted SPCA Inspector Lucky Jali, who fetched the dog. It had horrific facial injuries, which almost cost it an eye.

Both people have been charged under the Animal Protection Act. and both cases have been postponed pending further investigation.

Michael Muller, SPCA manager, said the animal welfare organisation will not tolerate the abuse of animals. “Fortunately both dogs are recovering well and will be returned to their owners, who weren’t responsible for their injuries,” he said.

If anyone suspects or notices any form of animal cruelty, they are asked to contact the SPCA immediately. They can remain anonymous when calling if they are afraid of retaliation. The SPCA relies on people informing them as this prevents further animal cruelty.

The SPCA is open from Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm, and on Saturday from 10am to midday. Call 039 3173362 or 083 2226354 or 083 2226355 after hours.

  1. if the owners are NOT responsible, then where were the dogs when they were abused???? If they were NOT on their own property then the owners are to be held responsible!
