SuperSport Schools: Raising a future generation of elite sportsmen and women

SuperSport has also joined forces with the MEC of Sports in the Eastern Cape in an effort to showcase more sport in the talent-rich region.

In an effort to bring development, growth and raise a future generation of elite sportsmen and women, SuperSport has acquired a majority stake in Schools Sport Live and have founded SuperSport Schools.

The new venture will bring coverage by broadcasting as many school sporting fixtures as possible across the country, aside from the well-known ‘Classic Clashes’. The focus will be on netball, hockey and rugby for the initial implementation phase, with cricket and water polo following suit as the programme extends.

The official launch was held online yesterday (April 22), and saw members of the media from across the country in attendance.

Amongst those in attendance were SuperSport CEO Marc Jury, Sports Marketing Manager Rendani Ramovha and SuperSport Schools Ambassadors – Lukhanyo Am (Springbok and World Cup winner), as well as Proteas netball captain, Bongi Msomi.

“This initiative is a natural extension of our mission to play our part to grow the pipeline for South Africa’s future sporting heroes. Schools sport is the foundation from which great sporting nations are built. The stronger the foundation, the brighter our future sporting stars can shine,” said Marc Jury.

Am and Msomi will be leading the campaign with the hope of taking SuperSport Schools to every corner of the continent.

“I really would have cherished this opportunity back in my school days, and this a good time to provide this platform to all the school kids who are the future of our sport,” Am said.

Msomi believes that building athletes at school level is important towards strength and conditioning in order to allow for peak performance.

“It’s really great that young athletes who compete at university level are granted access to high performance facilities, but I believe an even greater level of potential can be unlocked if focus is also put on grassroot levels.”

Outside of the coverage across SuperSport channels, the SuperSport Schools mobile application (app) will provide parents and other interested parties access to view schools sport anytime, anywhere, live and on-demand.

This initiative has seen SuperSport also partner with Nashua. Their national footprint of engineers provide a world class service offering to install, maintain and support the project, especially as they have a great understanding of the school’s infrastructure environment.

According to Rendani Ramovha, this will also provide employment opportunities for the South African public. “When it comes to broadcasting, there are multiple opportunities available on scene and behind the scenes. In the upcoming weeks, we will most definitely be availing those opportunities to the South African public.”

SuperSport has also joined forces with the MEC of Sports in the Eastern Cape in an effort to showcase more sport in the talent-rich region.

“The Eastern Cape has produced many of South Africa’s finest sporting stars, we hope our contribution will help to start unveiling talent from all corners of the province,” Mr Jury concluded.
