OPINION: ‘No free flow of traffic into Port Shepstone CBD’

The municipality is aware of the congestion and from time to time our law enforcement personnel is deployed to deal with double parking as a short-term solution.

DEAR Editor;

I appeal to law enforcement to assist with traffic control at the entrance to Port Shepstone CBD (near the taxi rank, Shoprite).

Traffic always comes to a standstill in this area during peak hours and vehicles back up to the bottom of the hill, almost reaching Hi-Land Tyres at times.

When entering Port Shepstone, you notice drivers often double parking and there is no free flow of traffic, only allowing two, maybe three, cars to cross the traffic lights at a time, causing the backup.

It sometimes takes 30 to 45 minutes just to enter town .

If there was some kind of traffic control from law enforcement it will make travelling into and out of town so much easier.

RESPONSE
The municipality is aware of the congestion and from time to time our law enforcement personnel is deployed to deal with double parking as a short-term solution.

However, it should be indicated that the problem with Port Shepstone is bigger than it seems due to population growth and development in relation to how the town was initially planned and it therefore needs a long-term solution.

As a long-term solution to this problem and many others regarding Port Shepstone town, Port Shepstone was selected through a thorough prioritisation process as KwaZulu-Natal’s first small town to be targeted for planning and investment support in terms of the Small Town Regeneration Programme.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality received an allocation from National Treasury under the Neighbourhood Development Partnership Grant (NDPG) for the implementation of the Small Town Regeneration Programme.

Plans are at an advanced stage for this programme which will surely address this challenge and many others experienced within the Port Shepstone town.
