Explosive action at seniors tennis tournament

The South Coast was well represented by Lulamile “Gevaar” Nompuku and Stefano Francesconi.

The Ugu Pro-Kennex national seniors tournament concluded last Sunday and saw an action packed final day in the men’s and women’s singles matches.

The tournament took place at Umtentweni, Uvongo and Douglas Mitchell Tennis Clubs.

The early rounds began with three sets being played, the first being two tiebreakers and the last being a ten point tiebreaker, with the final being played at a best out of 3 set tiebreaker.

The South Coast was well represented by Lulamile “Gevaar” Nompuku and Stefano Francesconi as they reached the final of the men’s 40-year age group doubles event.

Although they put up a good fight, they lost to Gauteng duo Duncan Horne and Chadley Brown 6 – 2, 6 – 1.

This set up an exciting showdown in the men’s 30-year age group between number one seeded Chadley Brown, who went on to face, second seeded Nicholas Brenner.

The much anticipated battle between number one and two captivated the attention of almost everyone in attendance as all eyes fell on court 3 at Uvongo.

After a toughly contested match, Brenner walked away with a fairly comfortable 6 – 4, 6 – 7, 6 – 0 victory.

The women’s 30-year age group singles final was won by Kim Peters 6 – 2, 6 – 2 against Gauteng player Debbie van Aswegan who was defeated after she lost the first two sets.

After a short rain delay, the women’s above 40 age group singles final resumed and Emile Kutumela won a gruelling three-hour battle in three sets, beating Rosanne Payne in a closely contested score line of 7 – 6, 6 -7, 7 – 6.

The men’s singles 45 year age group was contested between two Gauteng players, as Charl Muntingh swept past Duncan Horn 6 – 1, 6 – 1 in the final to claim first prize.

The tournament moved to Eden in the Western Cape on December 16.
