Margate detectives notch up another 2 convictions

They chased and caught the perpetrator and the community contacted the police.

Margate detective services recently secured convictions for two cases – attempted murder and house robbery.

In the attempted murder incident which occurred in September 2019, Simphiwe Zoko (25) was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment with no option of parole for the attack and robbery on a 75-year-old man in Nkampini, near Margate.

According to investigating officer, Sergeant Michelle van Niekerk, who was assisted by Warrant Officer Michael Welsh, the elderly man was walking home along a river in an isolated area when Zoko struck him with a rock and robbed him of R120, his Sassa card and ID book.

He sustained severe injuries, including a broken jaw.

“Two herders heard the commotion and went to the old man’s aid,” said Sgt van Niekerk.

They chased and caught the perpetrator and the community contacted the police.

The stolen property was recovered.

In the second case, Simphiwe Lushaba (26) was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for house robbery and 10 years for housebreaking.

The sentences will run concurrently.

In June 2019, Lushaba threatened a 32-year-old woman with a knife and stole cash and a cellphone from her home in Gcilima.

According to Sgt van Niekerk, the perpetrator was known to the victim.

In both cases, the prosecutor was Elize du Plessis.

Margate station commander, Brigadier William Slabbert commended members for a job well done.
