OPINION: ‘Cogta report on Ugu ‘the tip of the iceberg’ says DA’

All municipal officials in the employ of the institution implicated in the report must be suspended following the necessary due process.

DEAR Editor;

The Democratic Alliance welcomes the Cogta’s ‘Tsalach Report’ of corruption within the Ugu District Municipality.

This report was presented to the Ugu Municipal Council recently..

The DA was the only party that fought initially for an investigation as part of its campaign to ensure all Ugu District residents have access to water and sanitation.

The DA welcomes all the findings, conclusions and most importantly the recommendations.

All the recommendations must be implemented entirely without fear or favour.

We are of the view that the report is just the tip of the iceberg.

All municipal officials in the employ of the institution implicated in the report must be suspended following the necessary due process.

Those implicated but no longer in the employ of the municipality must be reported to SAPS with immediate effect and case numbers obtained.

We request the MEC Sipho Hlomuka to extend the terms of reference to the investigating team to investigate the siphoning of R300 million.

This to be treated as a matter of urgency.

All those implicated in the payment of salaries to the ghost employees must be suspended and the matter reported to SAPS.

All fraudulently issued contracts must be terminated with immediate effect.

The Ugu mayor must choose the residents and ratepayers over ANC cadres.

All stolen funds must be recovered and returned to the municipal fiscus to ensure service delivery, especially water services, is provided to all residents.

The DA is going to structure a monitoring system to ensure that all the recommendations are implemented so that Ugu may regain the trust of the electorate and ratepayers.

The DA will continue to fight for services.

DA Ugu District Municipality Caucus Leader
