Resident priest for Shree Raam Narayan Temple

With the Maha Navaratri Festival starting on October 17, culminating on October 24 and with the Vijay Dhakshmee (Day of Victory) on October 25, the public will have ample opportunity to meet him.

The Shree Raam Narayan Temple in Marburg has finally secured the services of a full-time priest.

“Our search for a Hindu priest and religious leader left us frustrated for many years. We made attempts to persuade Hindu priests from the greater Durban area to settle and serve but none were willing,” said temple president Singh Samsunder.

Also, attempts were made to get a priest from India but the immigration process was not successful.

As a result, priests from Umzinto and Durban only officiated at religious functions at the temple for the day.

However, the temple’s prayers were answered when it received an application from Pundit Minraj Sabkota from Nepal, on the border of India.

“He is a learned Hindu scholar, well-spoken in Hindi and English and also an astrologer. He recites from our Holy Scripts according to the Maha Hindu Sanathan Dharma. He will soon begin other religious activities at the temple,” said Mr Samsunder.

With the Maha Navaratri Festival starting on October 17, culminating on October 24 and with the Vijay Dhakshmee (Day of Victory) on October 25, the public will have ample opportunity to meet him.

The temple opened its doors with much fanfare and religious fervour in 1996 – a long awaited Hindu religious, cultural and traditional centre to promote and grow the aspirations of the Hindu community in Marburg.

It now serves the Hindu community of the greater Port Shepstone area.

Devotees who wish to have the priest officiate at their homes should contact Mr Samsunder at 083 3008382.
