OPINION: ‘Hit-and-run motorist, where is your conscience?’

I would like you to know this young man may have looked quite insignificant to you but in actual fact he was a very well loved person in the local communities of Kelso and surrounds, as well as Scottburgh.

DEAR Editor:

To the driver of the vehicle that struck a young man on the N2 freeway, at approximately 6.30pm on Sunday, September 6, how could you continue your journey without stopping?

I would like you to know this young man may have looked quite insignificant to you but in actual fact he was a very well loved person in the local communities of Kelso and surrounds, as well as Scottburgh.

Orphaned at a young age, his grandparents raised him to be a fine young man, schooled him through to matric, and he became regularly employed at various restaurants in Scottburgh as a waitron.

His grandmother attended a local church in Kelso, and he accompanied her as a child.

Because of his smiling face and cheerful disposition, the congregants grew to love this always happy young guy, who always had fine manners and respect for his elders.

He was involved in the youth ministry of the church for 10 years and helped to grow the group under the mentorship of the youth pastor.

Do you realise the trauma his family has been through, not knowing why he did not come home from work that evening?

Eventually one of the family posted him as missing on Facebook, in the hope that they could pick up a lead to try and track him down.

Eventually a response came.

A person living close to the freeway at the Sezela bridge had heard the sound of an impact on that evening and had gone to investigate.

They found the body of this young man lying on the road and called the police who removed the body to the mortuary.

What agony this family endured, not knowing where the young man was until Thursday, September 11 when they were informed about a young man found lying on the freeway, with the suggestion that the family visit the mortuary to see if that was their loved one.

To their horror, it was.

I am not sure if his beloved grandparents will ever recover from this tragedy.

All I am asking is to please listen to your conscience and inform your local police service so that the family can have closure as to what actually happened.

They do not seek revenge in any way, they just need to know what happened. Please search your heart about this matter and do the right thing.
