Mall shows caring side with hamper donations

Southcoast Mall's marketing manager Sanitha Amod recently visited Genesis Care Centre in Marburg to donate 40 toiletry hampers for its patients as part of its 'doing good' for Mandela Day 67.She said the mall was pleased to have been able to play a part in supporting the care centre, especially in these difficult times. The only regret, she said, was that due to Covid-19, she was not able to hand the gifts to the patients in person, like last year.?The centre does such incredible work,? she said. ?It's still in need of essentials, especially things like soap, toothpaste and body lotion, and we encourage others to donate as well. Due to Covid-19 it's difficult as families cannot visit and drop off necessities.? Sharon Jones, operations manager at the centre, thanked the mall for the generous donation.?Your gift is a true blessing and will allow us to continue the work entrusted to us in the daily care, comfort and support for our patients, their family members and ultimately the community at large,? she said. The centre is a holistic step down and palliative care facility catering for up to 40 patients a day. Patients are referred to the centre by government hospitals and health community clinics in the Ugu area and receive excellent nursing, psycho-social, spiritual support, and a rehabilitation programme.Through the management of committed staff and professional volunteers, the centre has been able to provide care for patients with HIV/Aids, tuberculosis, strokes, cancer, pressure sores and chronic illnesses. It has nursed and cared for more than 5100 patients over the last 14 years.?We provide a continuum of care for patients to either recover well enough to return to their homes, jobs and family or in the case of death, to die with dignity, care and support. We are glad to share that the number of patients well enough to return home continues to grow, with patients and families reuniting, implementing values and life skills learned,? said Sharon.
