Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink

In just one morning, the Herald discovered water flowing unchecked down Mgazi Avenue in Umtentweni, Oceanview Road in Lions Grove and Station Way/Gray Road in Southport.

While large parts of the coast have been without water for lengthy periods, burst pipes and unchecked water leaks have led to thousands of litres of fresh drinking water going to waste.

The Herald has fielded numerous complaints and queries, both by telephone and on its Facebook page, regarding the ongoing water issues plaguing the district.

“It’s terrible to watch helplessly as thousands of litres of fresh drinking water is wasted, and nothing is done. How can we accept this?” asked one caller.

Upon investigating, in just one morning the Herald discovered water flowing unchecked down Mgazi Avenue in Umtentweni, Oceanview Road in Lions Grove and Station Way/Gray Road in Southport.

When asked if they had reported these leaks to Ugu, the general response was that attempts to do so had been made, but that in most cases, either they battle to get through to the call centre or they receive reference numbers but that’s where it ends.

Those living in Station Way and Gray Road said they had been calling Ugu for more than a week, while those in Oceanview Road went as far as to call in a private contractor.

Fresh water goes to waste near RA Engar Primary while some parts of the coast have had .little or no supply for weeks.

An annoyed Kristy Naicker said he had been unable to access his driveway since a pipe had burst in the road in front of his house last week.

The Herald has reported all these leaks to Ugu but had received no response at the time of writing.
